In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Week, Why Media has teamed up with popular leisure services Rock Up Adventure, Pure Gym, and Gymfinity Kids at The Heart Shopping Centre in Walton-on-Thames to highlight the significance of reducing screen time for mental well-being.
Mental Health Awareness Week, led by the Mental Health Foundation since 2001, unites millions across the UK to prioritise mental wellness. This year’s focus for Mental Health Awareness Week which takes place between the 13th and 17th May 2024, is movement, giving these key leisure providers a great opportunity to highlight their benefits.
Claire White, Agency Partner at Why Media, commented, “It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of a campaign that advocates for mental health awareness. Mental well-being is such a crucial aspect of our lives, and being able to contribute to initiatives that support those in need is incredibly fulfilling. At Why Media, we are passionate about supporting communities and fostering positive change. We believe in using our platform and resources to make a meaningful difference, whether it's through raising awareness, providing support, or donating to organisations.
Mark Middleton, Centre Manager at The Heart Shopping Centre, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, “We are dedicated to promoting mental health awareness and well-being in our community. By partnering with Why Media and our retailers, we are not only raising awareness but also actively contributing to the mental wellness of our community. Together, we can create a positive impact and help our community thrive, fostering a sense of belonging and support among our residents.
Studies have shown the detrimental effects of excessive screen time on mental health. Research reveals that children spending seven hours a day on screens are twice as likely to develop anxiety or depression compared to those with limited screen exposure. Additionally, Adventist Health reports that one in three parents believe they spend excessive time on their phones, while over half of teenagers feel their parents are frequently distracted by screens.
Contrastingly, Harvard studies indicate that meditative movement practices like yoga can mitigate depressive symptoms. By attentively observing bodily sensations and movements, individuals can alleviate stress and enhance mental clarity.
Why Media urges everyone to embrace a healthier lifestyle by limiting screen time and prioritising physical activity. By getting up, moving our bodies, and engaging in activities that bring us joy, we can boost our mental well-being and cultivate a happier and healthier lifestyle. So, let's put down our devices, step outside and support Mental Health Awareness Week!
