As of March 2024, Google Will Replace First Input Delay with Interaction to Next Paint in Core Web Vitals.

Google has announced that it will be replacing First Input Delay (FID) with Interaction to Next Paint (INP) as one of the Core Web Vitals metrics in March 2024. FID measures the time it takes for a user to be able to interact with a web page after it has finished loading. INP, on the other hand, measures the time it takes for a user to be able to interact with a web page after the first paint event.

The change is being made because FID is not always a reliable indicator of user experience. For example, a page with a long FID may still be usable if the user can interact with other elements on the page while they wait for the first input event to occur. INP, on the other hand, is a more direct measure of how quickly a user can interact with a page.

"We believe that Interaction to Next Paint is a superior measure of user experience than First Input Delay.  We are pleased Google is finally picking up on this and we will work hard to ensure all of our websites have been updated; ready for the rollout" comments Carl Piper, Agency Partner at Why Media. "Interaction to Next Paint is more closely aligned with how users interact with web pages, and it is a more reliable indicator of how quickly a page will feel responsive".

The change to INP will not affect the current Core Web Vitals thresholds. Pages that currently meet the FID threshold will still meet the INP threshold. However, pages that currently fail the FID threshold may now meet the INP threshold.

Google is providing a grace period for sites to transition to INP. Sites that fail the INP threshold after March 2024 will not be penalised in search results, but they will be encouraged to improve their INP scores.
